Talking about it Tuesday...

Happy Tuesday gorgeous hearts!  I am always amazed by the invaluable choreography of the universe.  The people who appear in my midst, the books that fall off of the shelves, the sights that I behold, the silent prayers that are answered, the lessons of possibility that unveil themselves…I can't help but feel the corners of my mouth turn upward in gratitude.

The other day I picked up a book I purchased about a year ago and during that time, struggled to connect with the content.  The Great Work of Your Life by Stephen Cope is sheer brilliance…he chronicles the ordinary tales of those seeking their dharma through the lens of The Bhagavad Gita.  The Bhagavad Gita is a 2,000 Yoga scripture on dharma.  Dharma according to Cope's research is all about "vocations and callings."  As the Bhagavad Gita states, “It is better to live your own destiny imperfectly than to live an imitation of somebody else's life with perfection.”

As I re-visit this book, I keep stumbling over the same sentence…"What do you fear most in this life?  What is your biggest fear? Right now."  Re-reading this sentence I feel urgency sauntering through the crooks of my life.  Thomas Merton says, "What you fear is an indication of what you seek."  I feel myself standing naked with truth.  This is a really BIG question to allow into one's inner world.  It takes compassion to stand in the center of your life and disrobe to all the 'stories' you have allowed to steer you thus far.  It takes courage to simply practice 'being' with yourself instead of identifying as a 'doing' machine.  Exploring this vulnerable question allows us to put down our weapons, to silence the inner critics, to simply be present…'Right now.' What is your dharma and why aren't you living it...

Fear is a rhythm in life that either propels us towards our greatness, or cripples us in our pursuit of discovery.  Fear's opposite is love.   Marianne Williamson so beautifully captures the essence of these two opposites, "Love is what we are born with.  Fear is what we learn.  The spiritual journey is the unlearning of fear and prejudices and the acceptance of love back in our hearts.  Love is the essential reality and our purpose on Earth.  To be consciously aware of it, to experience love in ourselves and others, is the meaning of life.  Meaning does not lie in things.  Meaning lies in us."

As we move towards our dharma; towards our calling, the waters of life can at times sweep over us in tsunami like proportions and at other times they wash over us in baptism.  This crazy beautiful ride is our life…it is our chance to practice sharing our dharma with the world.  With gratitude at the helm we can navigate any circumstance.  We don't need 'eternal garments' squelching our inner spirits.  What we need is a sacred alter at the center of our hearts…at this alter we can consciously practice sharing our gifts with the world.  In this spaces we honor the rhythms of our lives, we allow love to emerge out of the ashes of fear.  We find freedom in disrobing the unkept desires of our souls.  When we are living our dharma we are unstoppable.

May you be inspired to live your vocation.  May you inspire others to live their callings.  May you not shy away from your own light, but rather run towards it with outstretched arms…come home to yourself.

May You Sweetly Seek:)
In Gratitude,
Sarah

Happy Sunday beautiful hearts….I was walking this morning and I couldn't help but admire the precious shells lining the shore.  Each one so different and unique; just as we are.  It took all of the different shells to create this beautiful word…Love is the echo of our lives…it is the point where we no longer see separation.  Love is the shore line just as much as it is the horizon line.  Love continually multiplies itself.   It is who we are…it is how we express…it is the most powerful vision of ourselves and others.  Love leaves it's calling card in every sight we behold, in every breath we take, in every word we speak, in every touch we exchange.  Love is our natural state of being.  Love is born in the stable of all hearts and its journey is our grandest adventure.  Love is constructed in each breath.   We draw in…we let go.  Love is the shelter for our blessings….It is the warehouse of our awareness.
Love only knows the splendor of being love itself….

LOVE IS….
The energy of love kisses awake the dawn.
Love is the dawn

The energy of love gently tucks in the shadows of night
Love is the night

The energy of love is the evolving presence of imperfection
Love is imperfection

The energy of love is the duality of Yin and Yang
Love is the Yin and the Yang

The energy of love is the bridegroom of faith
Love is faith

The energy of love is the quilted cloak of patience
Love is patience

The energy of love is the soaring awareness of freedom
Love is freedom

The energy of love is the sweeping breeze of change
Love is change

The energy of love is the devoted heart of passion
Love is passion

The energy of love is the joy of surrender
Love is surrender

The energy of love is the rapture of a lover
Love is the lover

The energy of love is the absolute ovation from life
Love is the ovation

The energy of love is held within the innocence of all
Love is innocence

The energy of love is the wisdom of awareness
Love is awareness

The energy of love is the dignified alchemist
Love is the greatest alchemist

The energy of love is the guru
Love is my guru

The energy of love contains all and lacks nothing
Love is all…

"I Lived"

Hope when you take that jump, you don't fear the fall
Hope when the water rises, you built a wall
Hope when the crowd screams out, they're screaming your name
Hope if everybody runs, you choose to stay

Hope that you fall in love, and it hurts so bad
The only way you can know is give it all you have
And I hope that you don't suffer but take the pain
Hope when the moment comes, you'll say...

I, I did it all
I, I did it all
I owned every second that this world could give
I saw so many places, the things that I did
With every broken bone, I swear I lived

Hope that you spend your days, but they all add up
And when that sun goes down, hope you raise your cup
Oh, I wish that I could witness all your joy and all your pain
But until my moment comes, I'll say...

I, I did it all
I, I did it all
I owned every second that this world could give
I saw so many places, the things that I did
With every broken bone, I swear I lived

Oh [4x]

With every broken bone, I swear I lived.
With every broken bone, I swear I...

I, I did it all
I, I did it all
I owned every second that this world could give
I saw so many places, the things that I did
With every broken bone, I swear I lived.

Oh [4x]

I swear I lived. Ohhh [2x]

Thankful Thursday...

Happy Thankful Thursday gorgeous hearts!  Today I am so thankful for the cathartic process of writing.  For me, the act of writing is such a cleansing and transparent experience.  Writing offers life to the unanimated aspects of oneself.  I have found that sometimes the rawest experiences give birth to the most amazing stories.  I was going back through old journals yesterday and discovered this musing surrounding the sale of my grandparents belongings....if you have a story waiting inside, I hope today you allow it to soar out on a page...animate it with the seasons of your life...live it so that it doesn't become trapped in your body...love it with adoring eyes and a grateful heart.  May your life always be full of everything you love!
May you Sweetly Seek:)

~ HOPE ON THE HILLTOP~
                                                               August 2009

I awaken to the beauty of a quiet morning.  On this day we are bidding “The Hilltop” goodbye. We are having an auction for all of the treasures that were once my grandparents, both passed away within two months of each other.  Their hearts quickly slipped into the beauty of eternity together.

I wonder how today will feel?  The intense heat…the undercurrent of sadness…the relief of letting go.  It is early in the morning, and the crowds of people have not yet come to rummage through your life.  I feel immune to their invasion in this stillness.  It is my prayer that their fumbling won’t cause my heart to quiver. I stand with my camera trying to capture the essence of these alters.  The sacred collections of your life have been piled upon the Earth.  I feel like I am about to receive communion with the heritage of my ancestors.  These 'things' are how we have remembered you…such a silly thought to see you through the eyes of lifeless objects.  Mom and I cling to each other, kindred hearts searching for signs today.  Please let know that you are with us.  I offer the antidote of a walking meditation to mom so that she will feel your presence on this day in such a huge way.   Please help us to have the faithful eyes of heaven.

I leave the hilltop and travel to work.  We have meditation time at there and it is during this time that I ask my grandparents presence to be with me in an unmistakable way.

I see you in my meditation…my spacious place.  I sit upon the hill that we went sled ridding on, the beautiful tree that decorated the side of the hill.   With a quiet heart I hope that you will come, and you do in such an enormous and beautiful way.  Hand in hand you climb the hill to where I am sitting.  Grandma you have on your red and white checkered shirt, and grandpa you are in your miss matched plaids.  My heart is so full for you.  I have missed you in so many ways: the smell of your fluffy skin, the softness of your touch, the presence of your hearts, the steadfast faith, and the wishes of luck.  Today is the day of the sale, and in the background the land is littered with your life.  There are so many parts of you that others will be rustling through later on.  You don’t seem to notice that as you reach out a hand to me grandma and brush my cheek.  I asked for a gift from you and I know now that your gift is perfect sight.  You don’t see the remembrances of your lives scattered about, all you see is me… We don’t talk; we just allow the land to hold our beautiful connection.  Only the Earth will be able to withstand such a reunion….

It is almost time to return to the hill top, a drive in the shape of a horse shoe, a remembering of my grandpa who always wished us luck.  The auction is ready to begin. I feel such heaviness in my heart…I see my mom in her checkered shirt and my lip starts to quiver.  She looks like a lost little girl…an orphaned heart.  I hug her and again we cling to one another as we begin to walk the drive.  She joyfully exclaims that she found her sign during her meditation, not in the tears of the Earth, rather in the rafters of her father’s barn.  Her spirit determined to turn the lights on led her to the discovery of an answered prayer.  Amidst her search for illumination in the top rungs of the barn she stumbled across a window latch with the word HOPE…two horseshoes fell from above, and an old rusty lighter ignited her search.  Her recount makes my soul so full!  Spirit is so good in these precious moments of life where we stumble to feel our oneness.

The sale progresses in moments, instances of waiting.  Just as a child waits in wonder for the miracle of Christmas, so too we wait for the miracle of transcendence.  I purchase the Ramsey rocker, wondering how many times my grandfather sat in stillness, how many times his father sat in it…wondering if the swaying of our souls will somehow meet in the present.  When it comes time to purchase his desk, I see myself sitting there in the swells of knowledge with him.  I feel so proud to be of the same smiling heart.  The sale wears on…trying our hearts with each bid, releasing our sadness with each strangers need.  How bittersweet to watch as ones exterior life is dismantled.  The ease of letting go reveals itself in each heartstrings of this process.  A storm bursts overhead and with each drop  of rain a cleansing occurs.  This baptism stirs the sky’s palette and soaks these treasures of life.

People collect their new riches leaving a hole in the landscape once so luxurious with life.  A sacred space has been cleared for the gift of change.  My mom and her sister Judy are the consummate caretakers, and I wonder now who will watch over them? We tend to the leftovers of the sale so that Mother Earth may once again breathe and regenerate.  The sky quiets herself with shades of tangerine and pink sherbet.  We wander to the piles of treasures, carefully recycling them.  Our hearts have been forever marked.

All three of us head to our cars, only to be stopped by a bright light.  A light bulb flickers from an out building.  The three of us scurry over to the building, wondering who flipped the switch.  Night pulls the covers of light over her head and summons us to watch.  We carefully extinguish this light as we turn to grey skies and see the promise of hope…a rainbow is forming in the sky, ushering our hearts to delight in the glory after the storm.  Night continues to entice us as we hug and bid the hilltop goodbye.  This my friends is where we found our hope…quietly on “The Hilltop.”

Talking about it Tuesday...

"Love sometimes wants to do us a great favor; hold us
upside down and shake all the nonsense out."
~Hafiz

Happy Tuesday beautiful hearts!  On today's Talking about it Tuesday, I want to talk about love...what is this mysterious raw emotion all about, where does it originate from and why is it's presence in our lives so vitally important?  When I think of love, I think of snuggly babies, familiar friends, adoring lovers, natures bounty, sunsets, words, experiences, and so much more...love is the glue of life!

When I began searching the etymology of 'love' I discovered that love was originally termed 'leubh' and it's origin can be traced back to the Proto-Indo-Europeans an estimated five thousand years ago.  At this time 'leubh' meant 'desires.' It then evolved and was assimilated into Old English as 'lufu,' and was used to describe 'deep affection.'  Currently love is defined as 'a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person' and when used as a verb it means, 'to have love or affection for.'

So with all of this being said, why is love so IMPORTANT in our daily lives?  Minus the definitions and origins, when I get quiet and let this current of LOVE flow into my heart and my life, I find a wellspring of awareness that is organically constructed by the journey of my life. In this space there is no comparison, simply experiences that have flavored my heart with joy, with sorrow, with tender moments, with aching doubts, with gentle prayers, and infinite love.  I find myself staring at these 4 letters wondering how much of an impact they have had on the progression of our culture...wars have been fought, people have been killed, babies have been born, tears have been shed, poets have created, musicians have conducted, seasons have changed, beliefs have evolved, hearts break,  and time is unceasingly embellished by this illusory word.

Here's my definition of LOVE:
L is for Live...live a life of LOVE, support your fellow neighbor as they evolve on their journey, because their journey in essence is your journey.  As you reside in your physical bodies, don't forget from whence you came....you are infinite light, and joy is your birthright.  In order for LOVE to multiply, it must be tended to, it must be gently held and loosely anchored .  Live your life as awake as you can, create more of what you desire.  Speak of what you love...LIVE your LOVE in GRATITUDE...

O is for Opportunity....opportunity is the trailblazing companion of LOVE.  Opportunity offers us experience and possibility.  Each moment that we EXPRESS, FEEL, SHARE, EMBRACE, CREATE, and DREAM we open the galaxy of our hearts to more amazing opportunity.  Opportunity isn't positive or negative in nature, it is simply a tool of spiritual evolution meant to assist in our spiritual existence.  Opportunity offers us an intimate partnership with love.  It simply requests our full presence to observe all that goes on in our lives and encourages us to be a witness.

V is for Velocity....velocity accelerates our partnership with LOVE.  We are consistent changing spirits whose very nature is that of growth and change.  LOVE requires this velocity in our lives so that we may expand into the richest expression of our experiences.  Velocity is always at work in our lives bringing us closer to the highest and best good.

E is for Evolving...Evolving is the basic nature of LOVE.  We blossom into new experiences and die to ones that no longer serve us.  Our hearts break and then one day without even realizing it, they become the benevolent voice of wisdom calling us back towards meaning and truth.  Evolving in LOVE allows us to release attachments to those situations, people, and experiences that are no longer serving to express our highest self.  As we advance in compassion towards self and others our speed of LOVE-OLUTION greatly increases!

As you move throughout your day remember that you are expressing yourself as PURE LOVE...when in doubt, simply ask the question, "What would love do?"  Watch your life transform.

May you Sweetly Seek:)
In Gratitude,
Sarah

Monday's Musing...

"When you begin to touch your heart or let your heart be touched, you begin to discover that it's bottomless, that it doesn't have any resolution, that this heart is huge, vast, and limitless. You begin to discover how much warmth and gentleness is there,
as well as how much space."
- Pema Chodron

Happy Monday beautiful hearts!  Last week I had the amazing opportunity to take a private Yoga lesson from a gorgeous Yogi.  As I was sitting with Alexis, I felt an echo of gratitude roll off of my heart.  Her wisdom and sincerity for the practice were evident in every breath she took as well as every thoughtful word she spoke.  We briefly chatted about the journey and supportive resources to further investigate after our time together.  Moving to the floor to explore the ever illusive Chaturanga, she broke off into her 3 core philosophies of Yoga.

The first one has left me in a deep trance of inquiry..."If you aren't practicing loving-kindness, then what the fuck are your practicing?"  I heard myself giggle out loud as she so boldly spoke these words of truth.  Holy wow....her words echoed into my heart and took off like a soaring eagle.  This eagle of truth dive bombed my doubts, screeched out judgments, and perched itself in plain view.  So simple, right?

As I am sitting with this statement, I feel inspired to create little 'loving kindness' experiments throughout my day.  I notice when I situate myself in a space of judgment, when I contract because of my attachments, when I get lost in the forest of emotion, and when I am simply not present.  I decided to look up loving kindness and here are two definitions I discovered,  "tenderness and consideration toward others," while another is, "tender kindness motivated by or expressing affection."  What if in this very instant our only prayer, thought, or desire was that of tenderness towards others and towards self...imagine how amazing our world would be if we lived by Alexi's philosophy!

Whether you practice Yoga, or you don't, I truly believe you have a responsibility to practice loving kindness....This practice calls us to show up on our mats, to show up in our lives...its having compassion for one's self and then when we are able to master that, we are more fully able to offer the olive branch of kindness to another...there's no perfect place or way to begin, simply practice it when you notice your inner critic, practice it when you don't feel like it, practice when you feel separate, when you awaken to joy, when you surrender to love, when life takes your breath away, when you judge another, when you lift the veil of understanding, when you sing the songs of life, when you allow yourself to believe in miracles, and when you embrace the possibility that YOU could make a difference that ripples out into the universe.  As Rumi said, "
Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.”

Loving kindness begins with self, so ecstatically explore the landscape of your own heart and allow this tender truth to ripple out to everyone..."If you aren't practicing loving kindness, then......?"  Namaste!

May you Sweetly Seek:)
In gratitude,
Sarah

"It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade." ~Charles Dickens, Great Expectations
Happy Sunday beautiful hearts:)!  I hope this gorgeous day is inspiring you wherever you are.  The glory rays of this day are filling the vaults of winters hibernation and preparation.  As the sun pours in this morning I can feel the excitement of Spring whispering 'I'm almost here.'  I so appreciate the change of seasons...the passing of each one is an amazing energetic reminder to surrender to the natural rhythms of life.  Each season offers us an exquisite gift of wonder...we must simply bear witness to the unfolding miracles.  Summer offers us the gift of transformation and the bounty of seeds planted.  We find union in the heat of the day and our internal fires are lit with activity.  Fall ushers in the energy of purification and regeneration.  We reap the harvest of previous crops and prepare to manifest a new bounty of richness.  Winter's bleakness is cloaked in a blanket of opaque glory.  It is during this time of the year that we cultivate our inner light, we celebrate the seasons of love.  From this space of love and peace we welcome in the birth of Spring.  Spring is the kiss of a lover waking us up from a dream filled sleep.  This kiss awakens our creativity and life is born.

Here's an excerpt from a wonderful book, Nature-Speak by Ted Andrews.  He so gorgeously captures the energy of this time:
"As the sun moves out of the sign of Pisces (water-feminine) and into the sign of Aries (fire-masculine), that which we were cleansing and giving birth to through the winter can now be given greater expression.  The shift of the energy upon the Earth at this time of the year marks a time for greater expression of the masculine energy within all of us.  It is a time to un-veil and assert our creative aspects more dynamically and productively-a time to resurrect our innate gifts from the darkness.  The creative force within each of us stirs into greater outward expression.  Aries is the sign of creative fire, of new beginnings.  Much esoteric significance has been attributed to this time of the year....The keynote for this season is creating and expression of the new.  This is reflected in Nature.  New seeds begin to sprout.  Sap runs and flows, stimulating new growth.  Flowers and leaves begin to bud.  The natural world begins to resurrect itself.  For us, the rhythms are excellent for initiating new endeavors and manifesting opportunities for such within our life.  It is a time in which the energies propelling us are excellent for initiating a new order to one's life.  Spring's energies are strengthening and developing in the physical.  They facilitate initiating change and the beginning of the balancing of the masculine and feminine within us."

May you be inspired to move into the energy of this new season.  Allow yourself to give birth to new endeavors and opportunities and know that the universe is celebrating your every desire.

May you Sweetly Seek:)
In gratitude,
Sarah

Desiderata
Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others,
even to the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble,
it's a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself.
Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,
it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace in your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Thankful Thursday...

"Watch your thoughts,
They become words.
Watch your words,
They become actions.
Watch your actions,
They become habits.
Watch your habits,
They become character.
Watch your character,
It becomes your destiny."
~The Upanishads~
Happy Thursday beautiful hearts!  Today I am feeling so inspired by this verse from the Upanishads…there is timeless wisdom in each line of this gorgeous text.  Thankful Thursday is a space of non-stop gratitude, of Divine connection, of pure bliss.  To me, these footprints represent the thoughts we have, the words we speak, the actions we engage in, the habits we perpetuate, the character we reinforce, the destiny that we actively construct.

It is our job as gorgeous spirits to offer up the highest thoughts of ourselves.  As Marianne Williamson shares, "It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.  We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be?"  As we increase our vocabulary of gratitude we can't help but become observers of our words.  Our words are our tool of goodness, they are a cloak of possibility.  Underneath this cloak lies a priceless treasure of confirming relationship towards self and others.  Our words offer the peace of Spirit.  Words help us to move into the actions of life.  When we grow from a space of generosity and thanksgiving we create lives of Divine opportunity.  Positive words trickle down into the stream of our consciousness and we are able to move from a springboard of freedom.  Actions expressed in their highest form become the habits of our lives.  These habits create the energetic playground of awakening.  When we are awake watchers of our habits, we can plug into the sensual dance of life.  These habits connect us to our character; the tapestry of our stories.  Our character is born out raw simplicity.  When life breaks us down to our core, we are nothing more than an emanation of light.  Woven together with strands of love, filaments of grief, gems of joy…the breaking down of our character leads us into the realm of our destiny.  There is an unfolding of growth awaiting our presence.

As you move through the day, may you be thankful for the construction of your life.  A life that is sometimes messy with footprints, but raw with love.

May you Sweetly Seek:)
In Gratitude,
Sarah
